Yaadman, formerly known as Yung L, emerges as a dynamic figure in the global music scene, Born and raised in Jos, Plateau state, his musical journey is deeply rooted in his upbringing. Influenced by his mother’s love for music, he found his initial inspiration through encounters with the church drummer and later, the church pianist, Meca-E of Square Records. Graduating from the University of Jos, Yaadman, then known as Omenye, embarked on his musical odyssey, exploring various genres and honing his craft.
Music Career
His formative years saw him immersing himself in the vibrant music scene of Jos, where he coalesced with like-minded artists, forming the music group Mac9. Drawing inspiration from musical luminaries such as Damian Marley and Jay-Z, Yaadman began to carve out his own distinct sound, blending elements of Afrobeat, Dancehall, Reggae, Pop, and UK Garage.
Even before the release of his debut album “Better Late Than Never” in 2017, Yaadman demonstrated a remarkable work ethic, infusing his music with a diverse range of influences. His penchant for experimentation and innovation became evident with each project, as he seamlessly integrated elements of rock, Afrobeat, and dancehall into his sonic tapestry.
In 2020, Yaadman drop his EP “Juice and Zimm”. The seven-track project captivated audiences with its soulfully distilled rhythms and infectious melodies, offering a glimpse into the depth of Yaadman’s artistry. One standout track, “Eve Bounce,” received widespread acclaim and a remix featuring Afrobeats star Wizkid, catapulting it to international chart-topping success.
Yaadman’s illustrious career is punctuated by notable collaborations and accolades. His collaboration with Major Lazer on the remix of “Run Up” in 2017, featuring Nicki Minaj and PartyNextDoor, showcased his ability to transcend boundaries and capture global audiences. Singles like “Pass The Aux” and “SOS” further solidified his position in the industry, earning him a nomination for the MTV Music Video of the Year Award.
With a discography that boasts albums like “Better Late Than Never” (2017) and “Yaadman Kingsize” (2021), alongside EPs such as “Jollification” (2019) and “Juice & Zimm” (2020), Yaadman continues to push the boundaries of Afro-fusion music. His unique blend of genres and unwavering commitment to innovation have earned him a special place in the pantheon of artists diversifying the sound of music emanating from West Africa.
