Early life and Education
Born into Malian royalty in 1949, Salif Keita’s life took an unexpected turn due to the fact that we is an Albino, which is considered something bad in his culture.
Rejected by his family and community, he found and developed interest in music, defying traditions to pursue his passion.

He honed his skills with renowned Malian bands like Super Rail Band and Les Ambassadeurs, gaining international recognition in the late 70s.
Career
After leaving Mali due to their rules, Keita and his band (now renamed Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux) landed in Abidjan. Though finances were tight, they struggled and became popular after the release of their 1978 album “Mandjou.”
Seeking wider horizons, Keita relocated to Paris in 1984, mixing traditional West African sounds with European and American influences. His 1987 album “Soro,” produced by renowned music discoverer Ibrahima Sylla, propelled him to international stardom, captivating audiences with its dynamic rhythms and distinctive Malian flavor.
La Différence won Keita one of the biggest musical awards of his career: the Best World Music 2010 at the Victoires de la musique.
In November 2018, he announced his retirement from recording at a concert in Fana, Mali. The album Un Autre Blanc, which was released at the concert, would be his last.
In August 2023, Salif Keïta was appointed adviser to the head of the junta by Colonel Assimi Goïta.
