Early Life And Education

Coco Martin, born Rodel Pacheco Nacianceno, grew up in a challenging environment in Santa Cruz, Manila, after his parents separated at a young age. His grandmother, Matilde, played a significant role in his upbringing, often taking him to the Quiapo Church to seek guidance. 

Despite facing poverty, Martin attended school at Capitol Institute in Novaliches and later earned a degree in hotel and restaurant management from the National College of Business and Arts. To support himself, he took on various jobs, including distributing flyers, working as a barista, and driving. 

After college, Martin moved to Alberta, Canada, where he worked as a janitor and briefly as a housekeeper for a Filipino-Canadian woman before returning to the Philippines after nine months. Coco Martin began his career in 2001 as part of ABS-CBN’s Star Magic, making his acting debut under his real name, Rodel Nacianceno. He initially took on minor roles in films and TV ads before gaining recognition on German Moreno’s reality show “Walang Tulugan” in 2004. 

Martin’s breakthrough came with the lead role in the critically acclaimed indie film “Masahista” (2005), earning him his first Best Actor Award and international recognition.
