Nathi Nhleko was born in Ndabayakhe, South Africa. He grew up in Matshana in nearby Empangeni.

During his time at Matshana’s Amangwe High School, he actively participated in student politics. He studied at the Graduate Institute of Management and Technology, where he also earned a labour law diploma.

Following graduation, he pursued a master’s degree in leadership and change management at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Career

Nathi Nhleko was a member of the Department of Public Service and Administration’s special anti-corruption squad. Additionally, he has served as the deputy municipal manager for the uMhlathuze Municipality. In addition, he has held the position of regional commissioner for the Department of Correctional Services in KZN. For eleven years, he served as a Member of Parliament (MP).

Nathi Nhleko held a number of important posts while serving as a member of Parliament. He was named to lead the ad hoc Committee on Funding for Political Parties with Representations. Nathi Nhleko was victorious in the race for ANC Chief Whip and ANC Caucus Chair.

Nhleko rejoined the national government in May 2014, this time as the Minister of Police.  In this time, he made a number of contentious choices. He held the position of Minister of Public Works following a reorganisation of the cabinet from March 2017 until February 2018, when he was fired by President Cyril Ramaphosa, who succeeded Zuma.

Nathi served in the cabinet while not present in Parliament. On February 27, the day following Ramaphosa’s cabinet reorganisation, he took Makhosi Khoza’s place in the National Assembly by being sworn in as an ANC member, after the latter was banished from the party. Nhleko joined the Standing Committee on Finance as an ordinary member of parliament. He remained on the committee until the 2019 general election, at which point he resigned from the National Assembly.

In November 2014, Nathi and Nothando Nkomo tied the knot in a traditional Shembe wedding at the University of Zululand. But according to certain reports, they supposedly split up in 2016.
