Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshinafrom Soweto was born in soweto to a Nigerian father, and a Mozambican mother. 

Her father is of Igbo descent while her mother, who is Mozambican, is accused of allegedly committing identity fraud in South Africa. Adetshina was raised in Cape Town and she’s currently a law student as 2024.

Adetshina’s South African identity papers got revoked In October 2024 by the Department of Home Affairs after investigating her mother’s origins.

The probe reportedly uncovered initial indications of possible irregularities in her mother’s acquisition of South African citizenship. The Department of Home Affairs was rumored to be considering further steps, including potential criminal charges based on the investigation’s conclusions. 

Adetshina received widespread support from the public, who viewed her as a symbol of South Africa’s diverse population. The Economic Freedom Fighters, a far-left political party in South Africa, publicly backed her, urging an end to xenophobia and advocating for inclusivity.

Conversely, other parties such as the African National Congress and the Patriotic Alliance called for an inquiry into her nationality. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber confirmed that the department would examine Adetshina’s nationality only at the request of her family. 

A video circulating online showed Adetshina celebrating her pageant success with her Nigerian relatives, sparking further controversy.

The Miss South Africa pageant still insist that Adetshina fulfilled all the requirements to take part in the competition.

The Outcome

As a result of Adetshina’s mistreatment by certain individuals in South Africa, the Puebla International Festival organizers rescinded their invitations to the South African panelists and guests.

In a letter issued on X, the organizers stated that the decision was made due to South Africa’s perceived violation of the core principles of justice, equality, and human dignity upheld by the literary community. 

Consequently, South Africa has been removed as a featured country from the festival in Mexico.

Adetshina, representing Taraba State, emerged as the winner of Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 on 31 August 2024 at Eko Hotels and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos. 

Competing against 24 other contestants, the event was broadcast on GOtv and YouTube. Adetshina is set to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe competition in Mexico scheduled for November 2024.
