Early Life And Education
J Hus, born in London to Gambian parents, was raised by his mother in the Stratford district. He was brought up in a Muslim household, with Fula and Wolof heritage. Exposed to African music from a young age, he initially wanted to act, but was expelled from school in his teens.
After two prison stints, his friend Moe encouraged him to pursue music, becoming his manager and forming 2K Management with his brother. J Hus’ stage name originated from his entrepreneurial spirit, selling doughnuts at a profit in secondary school, earning him the nickname “hustler”.
Career
J Hus kicked off his career by releasing freestyles online, including #StreetHeat, Bl@CKBOX, and GRM Daily. His breakthrough came with “#Rated” and “Want From Me” Remix, followed by the hit single “Dem Boy Paigon”, which blended Afro-beat with lyrical rap. He continued to gain momentum with “No Lie”, “Warm Up Session”, and “Westwood Crib Session” with MoStack.
In 2015, he released “Lean & Bop”, which racked up over 10 million streams, and “Daily Duppy” for GRM Daily. His debut mixtape, The 15th Day, followed shortly after.
In 2016, J Hus released “Friendly”, which earned a MOBO nomination, and featured on MoStack’s “Liar Liar” (Remix) and “Solo One”. The following year, he collaborated with Nines, Stormzy, and Dave, and released his debut album Common Sense, which received critical acclaim and featured “Did You See”, a solo single that peaked at number 9 on the UK Singles Chart.
In 2018, J Hus released his EP Big Spang, but his career was put on hold when he was sentenced to eight months in jail for carrying a bladed article. During his incarceration, his label halted music releases, except for a verse on Dave’s song “Disaster”, which debuted at number eight on the UK Singles Chart in March 2019.
Following his release from prison in April 2019, J Hus made a surprise appearance at Drake’s O2 Arena concert in London. Later that year, he released the singles “Must Be”, “No Denying”, and “Repeat”. In December 2019, he announced a hiatus from touring and revealed plans to focus on his next album, with no future features except possibly with Burna Boy and 21 Savage.
His second album, Big Conspiracy, debuted at number one in January 2020. After a two-year hiatus, J Hus returned with the single “It’s Crazy” in May 2023, followed by “Who Told You” with Drake, which peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart.
On June 29, he announced his third album, Beautiful and Brutal Yard, with a trailer narrated by Idris Elba. The album was released on July 14, debuting at number one on the UK Albums Chart, with the single “Militerian” featuring Naira Marley released a day prior.
