Early life and educationÂ
Mbongeni Theo Mbonambi was born on 7 January 1991 in Bethlehem, in the South African province of the Free State. His desire to become a rugby player was inspired by his parents’ intense passion for sports.
He studied in Pretoria at St. Alban’s College. And he went on to study at the University of Technology Tshwane.

Bongi was raised in a solid environment together with his siblings by his mother, a nurse, and father, a police officer. The Mbonambi clan is athletic. Bongi’s mother played tennis, his brother played football, his sister played baseball, and his father boxed.
Career
In 2012, Mbonambi began his professional career with the Bulls team, where he made his Super Rugby debut in a Pretoria match against the Crusaders. Up until 2014, when he transferred to the Stormers and Western Province, he was a player for the Bulls and the Blue Bulls. He started playing for the Stormers and Western Province on a regular basis, and in 2017 and 2020 he won the Currie Cup.
Mbonambi made his announcement to join the Sharks in June 2021, following South Africa’s captain Siya Kolisi to the Durban-based squad. At the 2011 Junior World Championship in Italy, where the Baby Boks placed sixth, Bongi Mbonambi represented South Africa U20. In June 2016, he replaced the then-captain Adriaan Strauss as the Springboks made their Test debut against Ireland. In November 2017, he made his Test debut against Italy and scored his maiden international try.
Mbonambi started in four games, including the championship match against England, as a member of the Springboks team that won the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. During the competition, he scored two tries against Italy and Namibia. Bongi Mbonambi was a member of the Springbok team that competed in the French Rugby World Cup final in 2023. He began every game that South Africa engaged in.Â

Mbonambi is married to Anastacia Mbonambi and they have been married  for the past six years.  Esa Khanyisile, their daughter was born in May 2019.
