Kholeka Gcaleka was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She was raised in the town of Harry Gwala District Municipality in South Africa .
Kholeka Gcaleka started and also finished her early schooling In KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa which was Little Flower High School in Ixopo. She also attended University of KwaZulu-Natal for her higher education and was awarded a law degree.

In 2006, Kholeka Galeka received formal admission to the supreme court as an advocate. She has held a number of positions, including deputy director of public prosecutions and senior state advocate in addition to special advisor.
 She was the national chairwoman of the South African Society of State Advocates for a period and is an appointed advocate of the High Court of South Africa. She works as director at Khonconsulting and is a member of the Black Lawyers Association. Malusi Gigaba had her as a special advisor when he was the minister of finance and home affairs.
 Advocate Adele Barnard nominated her, and she was subsequently chosen to replace advocate Kevin Malunga as deputy public protector when his term ended. She was one of the eight candidates, and her extensive expertise in the government from her several positions held over her career helped her win the job.
Years of devoted service and perseverance paid off for Kholeka Gcaleka, who emerged victorious from the gruelling selection procedure in the Parliament. Alongside her, Moshoeshoe Toba, Shadrack Nkuna, Noxolo Mbangeni, Lwasi Phumelela Kubukeli, and Puleng Matshelo were also nominated.
