Early Life

Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, who later became known as Daddy Lumba, experienced immense loss at a young age with the passing of his father, Owoahene Kwadwo Fosuh, a teacher, and later his mother, Comfort Gyamfi, also a teacher, who was fondly called Ama Saah.

Lumba was left orphaned by their deaths, and his mother’s passing in 2001 in Kumasi hit him particularly hard, as she was his rock and pillar of support.

Career

At just 16 years old, Daddy Lumba’s musical journey began as the leader of the choir at Juaben Senior High School from 1983 to 1984, under the guidance of music teacher Christabel.

His passion for music continued as he formed the Lumba Brothers group with friends Yaw and Kwabena, along with his girlfriend Theresa Abebrese during his time at Juaben SHS.

Upon completing school, Lumba, with the support of Theresa, set off to Germany in search of better opportunities. It was in Germany where he crossed paths with Ernest Nana Acheampong, a pivotal figure who introduced Lumba to highlife music, a genre he was unfamiliar with at the time.

Together, they formed the Lumba Brothers group once again, this time aiming to release an album in 1986. However, financial constraints delayed the album’s release until 1989, with Lumba’s wife, Akosua Serwaa, stepping in to produce the album titled Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu.

This collaboration produced five chart-toppers and catapulted Ofori Amponsah to fame, marking just one instance of Lumba’s knack for fostering talent and launching the careers of various Ghanaian musicians.

In the same year, Daddy Lumba achieved a triumphant sweep at the Ghana Music Awards, clinching three prestigious accolades for Best Album, Artist of the Year, and Most Popular Song of the Year. From surprising fans with gospel albums to stirring up debates with his provocative lyrics and music videos, he has experienced both acclaim and criticism. Additionally, accusations of skin bleaching have surfaced, allegations that Lumba vehemently refutes.
