Early Life And Education

Tyler Joseph, born in Columbus, Ohio, grew up with two younger brothers, Zack and Jay Joseph, along with a sister named Madison Brett. His mother, Kelly Joseph, was a math teacher before becoming a high school basketball coach, while his father, Christopher Anthony Joseph, has Lebanese and American heritage and worked as a coach and former school principal. Joseph’s early years were spent homeschooled, where he developed a love for music through Christian rap rock group DC Talk and indie band The Killers. Influenced by actor Jim Carrey, Joseph also excelled in basketball, playing as a point guard for his high school team and even reaching the state tournament. He shared the court with future Twenty One Pilots bassist Nick Thomas and together, they performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” at games.

Career

In 2007, Tyler Joseph debuted on YouTube as part of “slushieguys,” sharing comedic skits. Despite the channel’s last upload in 2013, it has garnered 122,000+ followers. After watching a songwriter at a club, he chose music over a basketball scholarship.

Using an old keyboard from his mom, he crafted tunes mimicking hits. Independently, he created “No Phun Intended” in 2007-2008 in his basement, incorporating Thomas’ guitar skills. Starting with Twenty One Pilots, Joseph fondly remembers his mother’s support, promoting his shows outside Ohio State University, inviting strangers with pride.

The album, created in Joseph’s high school basement, featured guitar contributions from Nick Thomas. Although the project was removed in 2015, fans compiled and preserved the tracks. Additionally, a song called “Going Down” and an untitled demo by Joseph surfaced online on July 2, 2018.

Formed in 2009 in Columbus, Ohio, Twenty One Pilots was initially comprised of frontman Tyler Joseph, bassist Thomas, and drummer Chris Salih, who later departed from the band in 2011.

The band’s third album, Vessel, came out on January 8, 2013, coinciding with their “Quiet Is Violent World Tour.”

The band released their fourth album, Blurryface, on March 17, 2015. Fans crashed the website trying to pre-order it, and it was unexpectedly dropped on May 17, 2015. They toured extensively with the Blurryface and Emotional Roadshow World Tours. They won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.

Their fifth album, Trench, was announced on July 11, 2018, with The Bandito Tour starting on October 16, 2018. Key music videos like “Nico and the Niners” and “My Blood” were released ahead of the album launch on August 27, 2018.
