Dequantes Devontay Lamar, known as Rich Homie Quan, was born on October 4, 1989 in Atlanta, Georgia. Growing up, he had a passion for reading and excelled in literature classes. Lamar played baseball in high school and had dreams of going pro, but financial issues led him to drop out of college after just two weeks. After working odd jobs, Lamar turned to crime and spent time in jail. It was during this time that he began taking music seriously and found his calling as a rapper. Influenced by artists like Jeezy, Gucci Mane, and Lil Wayne, Rich Homie Quan’s music career began to take off.
Career
Rich Homie Quan made waves in the music scene in 2012 with his hit “Differences” off the mixtape Still Going In. He toured with Trinidad James the following year and collaborated with Gucci Mane and Young Thug. His single “Type of Way” reached number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Rolling Stone recognized his mixtape Still Goin’ In (Reloaded) as the tenth best in 2013. Despite rumors of signing with Def Jam, Quan remained independent. He featured on tracks by YG and 2 Chainz.
Rich Homie Quan worked on his debut album and released the mixtape I Promise I’ll Never Stop Going In in 2013. The 2013 Spartan football team adopted “Type of Way” as their anthem, with Quan performing at the Rose Bowl. He was also a part of the 2014 XXL Freshman class.
Rich Homie Quan experienced a health scare while shooting a music video in Atlanta, clarifying later that he had fainted and hit his head, denying drug involvement. Personal Life
Lamar is a father of four sons, with his oldest, Devin, born in 2006. Lamar only learned about Devin five years after his birth. In a separate incident on September 29, 2014, Lamar’s father, Corey Lamar, was shot during a robbery attempt at an Atlanta barbershop but fortunately survived.
