Early Life And Education

Born on September 19, 1995 in Columbia, Maryland, Christopher Brent Wood grew up with a mix of Hispanic and African-American heritage. 

He discovered his passion for music at age 12 and later graduated from Long Reach High School at 17. Despite initial skepticism, he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina to pursue his dreams and improve his work ethic.

Faiyaz has named Lauryn Hill as his primary influence, stating she inspired him to start singing early on. He has also cited Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Aaliyah, Tupac Shakur, Currensy, Lil Wayne, Curtis Mayfield, and Gil Scott-Heron as inspirations in his music.

Career

Before his official career began, Faiyaz recorded music at home due to financial constraints. He released his first EP, Sunset Ave., in March 2013 and his second EP, Black Child, in December of the same year. 

Faiyaz uploaded experimental music on SoundCloud in 2014 before moving from Maryland to North Carolina and eventually settling in Los Angeles. 

His debut single, “Allure,” was released on January 19, 2015. He formed the group Sonder with producers Dpat and Atu in October 2016, releasing their debut single “Too Fast” later that month. Faiyaz gained recognition for his feature on GoldLink’s single “Crew” in December 2016.

Sonder released their debut EP “Into” on January 26, 2017, receiving praise from Duplion and Complex rankings. Faiyaz was featured in the remix of GoldLink’s “Crew” in June 2017. He also collaborated with Juice Wrld on “Demonz (Interlude)” in March 2019.

Faiyaz released “Fuck the World” on February 7, 2020, peaking at number 20 on the US Billboard 200. He later dropped singles like “Dead Man Walking” in September 2020, “Gravity” in January 2021, and “Circles” in February 2021. 

His album “Wasteland” was released on July 8, 2022, debuting at number 2 on the Billboard 200. Faiyaz described the album as a reflection on the post-pandemic era. Songs on the album include “Loose Change”, “All Mine”, and “Jackie Brown”.

In May 2023, Brent Faiyaz started his own label, ISO Supremacy, with United Masters in a deal estimated at over $50 million. ISO Supremacy also teamed up with PULSE Records, part of Concord Music Group. 

Faiyaz’s goal is to give artists like Tommy Richman a creative space to shine globally while focusing on originality. He dropped two singles, “Moment of Your Life” with Coco Jones and “WY@” in August and September 2023 before releasing his album “Larger than Life” on October 27, 2023.
