Personal Life

Booi was born on April 6, 1981, in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa. She attended Dominican Convent in Belgravia, Johannesburg for primary school and went on to complete her high school education at Potchefstroom High School for Girls, graduating in 1998. 

During her school years, Booi participated in the choir and took part in various school plays. She obtained an associate degree in Theatre Arts from Midrand University, now known as Midrand Graduate Institute.

In 2015, Booi bravely shared her struggles with depression, revealing that she had battled the condition for many years.

Career

In 1997, Vuyelwa was chosen to be part of the North West Youth Choir and embarked on a tour in Europe in July. During this tour, she performed in five countries, took part in competitions, and participated in choir festivals. 

In 2000, she landed a lead role in an Industrial play at the Market Theatre. The following year, in 2001, she joined the cast of the SABC2 soap opera 7de Laan, where she portrayed the character “Alyce Morapedi” until 2004.

After moving to New York in 2005 to further her drama studies at the New York Film Academy, Vuyelwa returned to South Africa in December of the same year. She then joined the musical play Drumstruck, which was performed off-Broadway. 

In 2006, she provided backing vocals for musician Wyclef Jean on the remix of the 2006 FIFA World Cup theme song alongside Shakira. Additionally, she reappeared on 7de Laan in November 2006.

Vuyelwa took on the lead role of “Pabi” in the SABC1 youth drama Soul Buddyz season three and made a guest appearance on the SABC2 music game show Noot vir Noot. She was also invited to host the SABC2 lifestyle magazine series Pasella during that time.

In 2010, she became the host of the SABC2 consumer rights show “Speak Out,” replacing Dosto Noge for its fourth season. Vuyelwa later replaced Anele Mdoda as the host of the docu-reality series Dream School SA in 2015. 

That same year, she made her film debut in the Hollywood blockbuster Chappie and played the character “Maria” in the film Sink. In 2017, she joined the cast of Swartwater, portraying the role of “Portia Malefe.”

From 2018 to 2021, Vuyelwa’s notable works include her role as a teacher in the TV series iKhaya, portraying Adjutant Nkonyeni in the TV series Spoorloos, and playing the character Grace Dukashe in the TV series Hush Money.
