Early Life And Education

Makhadzi, born in Ha-Mashamba Tshivhangani in Limpopo, grew up with her mother and two siblings after her parents separated. She completed grade 12 at Mukula Integrated School and holds a qualification in Public Relations while pursuing drama studies.

Career

At 13, Makhadzi began her career performing at taxi ranks, receiving offerings from the crowd. After dancing for the group Makhirikhiri, she shifted focus to music, independently releasing albums like Muvhango (2009) and Rita Dee (2014). 

In 2015, she signed with Rita Dee Entertainment, leading to the release of Muhwalo Uya Ndemela. She later gained fame with hits like “Tshanda Vhuya” and “Matorokisi,” with accomplishments like winning Best Female Artist and Tshivenda Best at the Fame South African Music Awards. 

Transitioning to Open Mic Productions, she released the successful album Kokovha in 2020, which became the most streamed on Apple Music and received a gold plaque certification.

In April 2021, Makhadzi dropped the single “Mjolo” featuring Mlindo the Vocalist, reaching number 28 on South Africa iTunes charts. Another hit, “Ghanama,” featuring Prince Benza and King Monada, went platinum in July. 

She announced her album “African Queen” in August 2021, releasing singles like “Tchukutsha” with Lady Du and a collaboration with Kabza De Small titled “Salungano.” The album, featuring artists like Cassper Nyovest and Kabza De Small, was released in September. Makhadzi won a nomination for Best Female Artist in South Africa at the All Africa Music Awards with the album.

In March 2022, her EP “Pain Ya Jealous” achieved Gold status in South Africa. She is currently working on her next studio album, “African Queen 2.0,” slated for release on 18 November 2022, featuring artists like Blaq Diamond and Big Zulu, with early success in Botswana.

In May 2023, Makhadzi parted ways with Open Mic Production and launched her own record label, Makhadzi Entertainment. She then released her sixth studio album, “Mbofholowo,” on 1 September 2023, which quickly achieved one million streams on Apple Music and was certified platinum in South Africa. 

Makhadzi was named Spotify’s Equal ambassador in September 2023. Her hit single “Number 1” featuring Iyanya and Prince Benza debuted at number 9 on The Official South African Charts and went double platinum within two months. 

She also received awards for Dance Artist of the Year and International Achievement of the Year at the 2024 Basadi in Music Awards. In August 2024, Makhadzi announced the release date of her upcoming album on October 7.
