Born in Los Angeles, California to Jamaican parents, McFarlane shared in a 2013 interview with The Fader magazine that his father was deported to Jamaica during his youth, yet they still maintained contact. At the age of 11, his uncle Tyrei Lacy, who served as both a paternal figure and a DJ, introduced him to DJing at a family gathering, igniting his passion for spinning records. Progressing to DJing at parties while attending Dorsey High, McFarlane honed his skills and soon found himself showcasing his talents at local clubs. The origin of his DJ moniker, Mustard, stems from the condiment Dijon mustard, chosen due to his first name being Dijon.

Mustard’s Collaborations with artists like 2 Chainz and Young Jeezy further solidified Mustard’s reputation as a top producer in the industry.

In 2012, DJ Mustard collaborated with 2 Chainz on the hit track “I’m Different,” featured on 2 Chainz’s debut album. The song achieved commercial success, earning a gold certification and reaching number 6 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

This album hit the shelves on September 30, 2016.

Mustard went on to unveil his third album, “Perfect Ten,” on June 28, 2019, a project that spawned the Grammy-nominated hit “Ballin’.” Noteworthy is his production involvement in the creation of the Kendrick Lamar diss track “Not Like Us,” released amidst the Drake-Kendrick Lamar feud on May 4, 2024.

Mustard and Chanel Thierry began dating when he was 19 and later got engaged in 2018. They married on October 10, 2020, and have three children together. Mustard announced his decision to file for divorce from Thierry on May 3, 2022.

Following his separation from his ex-wife, Mustard began a relationship with Brittany Stroud. On Mother’s Day in 2024, the couple revealed that they are expecting a new addition to their family.
