William Poulter was born on January 28, 1993, in Hammersmith, London, to parents Neil, a professor of Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine, and Caroline, a former nurse who grew up in Kenya. He attended Harrodian School, alma mater of notable actors George MacKay and Robert Pattinson. However, Poulter struggled academically due to dyslexia and developmental coordination disorder, finding solace in drama, which gave him a sense of purpose. 

He briefly studied drama at the University of Bristol in 2012 but dropped out after a year to pursue acting full-time, following his casting in The Maze Runner.
