Early Life

Born on October 20, 1988, in Harlem, NYC, Darold Durard Brown grew up in Hamilton Heights with Trinidadian roots. His father, Darold Ferguson, ran a boutique that catered to music artists, influencing Ferg’s early interest in clothing design.

Following his father’s passing, Ferg started his clothing and jewelry brands. In 2005, he launched “Devoni Clothing” and designed exclusive belts worn by celebrities like Chris Brown and Swizz Beatz.

Career

In 2009, Ferg transitioned from painting and fashion design to developing an aggressive hip-hop style known as trap. He explained that “trapping means hustling” and his dedication to perfection earned him the nickname “Trap Lord”. A$AP Rocky, a friend since high school, pushed Ferg to pursue rapping and they later joined ASAP Mob. Their collaborations include songs like “Get High” and “Ghetto Symphony”.

Ferg made a splash with his debut single “Work” released in August 2012, gaining over 2 million views for its music video. His album “Trap Lord” was announced in January 2013, reflecting on his life experiences and aspirations. 

Signing with RCA Records and Polo Grounds, Ferg collaborated with various artists on remixes and released his album in August 2013. The album debuted at number 9 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 46,000 copies in the US, earning him the title of “Rookie of the Year” at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards.

In 2014, he featured on Ariana Grande’s track “Hands on Me” from her album “My Everything.”

In 2015, Ferg released the video for his single “Dope Walk” featuring a viral dance of the same name. The video, shot during New York Fashion Week, starred Cara Delevingne and included appearances by celebrities like Kanye West and Beyoncé. Ferg aimed to bring back the joy of dancing with the video. 

ASAP Ferg directed Future’s music video for “Thought It Was a Drought” and later released his second album “Always Strive And Prosper”. The album’s first single, “New Level” featuring Future, received gold certification. Ferg also went on tour with Playboi Carti and collaborated on the single “Look At Us Now” with Lost Kings and Ally Brooke.

Ferg has been touring with his DJ TJ Mizell since 2015, who is the son of the late Jam Master Jay. In 2018, Ferg featured in a Tiffany’s ad with Elle Fanning remixing “Moon River” and also narrated the Adidas World Cup advert ‘Creativity is the Answer’. 

In 2020, Ferg collaborated with Matt Sweeney on a track for Run The Jewels’ album RTJ4. There were rumors about Ferg leaving A$AP Mob in September 2020, but A$AP Nast clarified on Twitter that Ferg was still with the group. 

Ferg released his fifth album, “Floor Seats II,” on September 25, 2020, featuring collaborations with Marilyn Manson, Dennis Rodman, and Mulatto. In October 2021, Ferg announced he would be dropping the “A$AP” from his name, continuing his solo career simply as FERG. He released his first single, “MDMX,” in May 2024.
