Early Life And Education

Quincy Matthew Hanley, aka Schoolboy Q, was born on October 26, 1986, on a US Army base in Wiesbaden, West Germany, to military parents who divorced before his birth. His mother chose a random surname for him.

Hanley moved to Texas and then South Central Los Angeles with his mother, where he grew up on 51st Street. He played football from age six to 21 and attended several colleges after graduating from Crenshaw High School. Hanley joined the 52 Hoover Gangster Crips at 12 and later became a drug dealer, selling Oxycontin, crack cocaine, and marijuana. In 2007, he was arrested for home invasion and served six months in jail, with half on house arrest, before turning to music.

Career

Schoolboy Q started writing verses at 16, but didn’t take music seriously until 21. He joined Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2006, collaborating with Jay Rock and Ab-Soul.

His first mixtape, Schoolboy Turned Hustla (2008), led to a record deal with TDE. He formed Black Hippy with Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, and Ab-Soul. A brief feud with 40 Glocc ensued, but Q ended it, saying “he’s not on my level.” His second mixtape, Gangsta & Soul (2009), was his first official TDE project.

Schoolboy Q released his debut album Setbacks in 2011 to critical acclaim, followed by Habits & Contradictions in 2012. He toured with top artists, performed at festivals, and released singles like “Collard Greens”.

He appeared on TV shows, including The Tonight Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and was featured on soundtracks and magazine covers. He received a Grammy nomination and embarked on a three-month tour in 2014.

In February 2016, Top Dawg announced Schoolboy Q’s fourth album would drop before summer. Q then released singles “Groovy Tony” and “That Part” (feat. Kanye West) in April and May. He revealed the album, Blank Face LP, would release on July 8, but initially trolled fans with a fake cover using the Crying Jordan meme. Q performed a medley of “That Part” and “Groovy Tony” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in June.

Schoolboy Q announced a new album in 2016, which he said would show his growth and evolution as an artist. He revealed in 2017 that he had made around 50 songs for the album, but its release was delayed due to Mac Miller’s death. In 2019, Q announced the album’s title, CrasH Talk, and released it on April 26, debuting at No. 3 on Billboard’s top 200.

Schoolboy Q announced his sixth studio album in January 2020, but it was delayed. He collaborated with Gorillaz on “Pac-Man” in 2020 and appeared on The Freak Brothers in 2021. In 2023, Q teased updates on his album, and on February 1, 2024, he released the trailer for Blue Lips, which dropped on March 1, 2024, marking 10 years since Oxymoron.
