Early Life And Education

Baby Keem, born Hykeem Jamaal Carter Jr. on October 22, 2000, overcame a tumultuous childhood to become a rising music star. Raised by his grandmother in Las Vegas, Carter was surrounded by a musically gifted family, including relatives Kendrick Lamar and Nick Young.

Despite early interests in rapping, Carter delayed pursuing music due to his high-pitched voice. He began producing music at 13 and eventually invested in a home studio. Frustrated with his hometown’s stagnant music scene, Carter focused on gaming and online content creation before releasing his breakthrough mixtape, Die for my Bitch, which propelled him to move to Los Angeles and chase a music career.

Career

Baby Keem started making music in high school with “Come Thru”. His early EPs, Oct and Midnight, hinted at his future style, but were experimental. He gained momentum producing for Black Panther and Jay Rock, before releasing his debut mixtape, The Sound of Bad Habit, in 2018.

Baby Keem was named to XXL’s Freshman Class list and signed with Columbia Records, releasing “Hooligan / Sons & Critics” in 2020, which confirmed his relation to Kendrick Lamar.
