Early Life

Crayon (born November 21, 2000). He was born in Orile, Iganmu, Lagos, but his roots trace back to Ebonyi State in southeastern Nigeria. Growing up, he called Ojo, Iba, and Lagos his home, deeply connecting with the Ojo community.

From a middle-class background, music was always a part of his life. His father’s CD shop became his playground, sparking his passion for music early on.

Education

Crayon pursued his secondary education at Treasure Court College in Iba, Lagos State. However, despite multiple attempts at the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), he faced challenges in gaining admission into a tertiary institution.

Career

In 2016, at 16, Crayon’s journey into professional music began when a friend moved into his neighborhood and set up a studio called Much More Studios in Ojoba Barracks. There, he met music producer Ozedikus Nwanne, also learning music production. Crayon quickly recorded his first song, “Orobo Love,” although he now considers it subpar.

Undeterred by his initial disappointment, Crayon’s unwavering determination led him to create and share his music on social media. He tirelessly promoted his songs to various radio stations across Lagos, facing rejection from many. However, his persistence paid off when City 105.1 FM became the first radio station to play his music, earning him recognition in his neighborhood.

CRAYON WAS SIGNED TO MAVINS IN 2019

In 2018, Crayon’s talent caught the attention of Mavin Records producer Baby Fresh, who played one of his songs at the Mavin Headquarters. Impressed, Don Jazzy reached out to Crayon through Baby Fresh and invited him to the studio. Although their initial visit faced delays, Don Jazzy was impressed after listening to Crayon’s song “Long Throat” and offered to work with him.

From then on, Crayon split his time between the mainland and the island, often staying at Baby Fresh’s residence. During this period, he not only honed his craft but also discovered his unique sound, a blend of Afrobeat and pop. He recorded standout tracks like “So Fine,” Which showcased his distinct style. In 2018, he released his “Cray Cray” EP, featuring hit songs like “So Fine” and “Gock Am,” which garnered widespread acclaim.

His collaboration with the Mavin crew on “All is in Order” further elevated his profile in the music industry. He continued to make waves with features like his collaboration with Ladipoe. In 2021, he released his sophomore project, the “Twelve AM” EP, further solidifying his place as one of Nigeria’s rising music stars.
